Back issues galore!

What's going on? Two Big B weekend updates in one weekend? That's double your value right there! This is the Big B crew telling you to stop by the store as soon as you can, as we've crammed our back issue bins full of new books in preperation for the Fan Expo next weekend. As always, we're letting our great Big B regulars take first crack at these books. If you're looking to complete your runs, forget walking, run over to Big B right now, as these books probably won't be returning from the convention.

Apparently, blondes don't have more fun!

Greetings and salutations, comic readers! It's time for the Big B weekend update. After the past whirlwind week of comic releases, this week seems tame by comparison. But there was one big release for this week that you may have heard about on the news. That's right, Archie #600, a milestone for the series in which they try to settle a eternal love triangle of Archie, Betty and Veronica. In what is going to be a 6 issue story arc, Archie has finally chosen Veronica as his bride and in #600 pops the question to her. Archie my friend, you've had a better run of juggling two girls than even the greatest of Casanovas; present company excluded of course.

This week Marvel's biggest releases were Dark Reign: The Hood, Mighty Avengers, Wolverine Weapon X and the conclusion of Deadpool: Suicide Kings. Jeff Parker has done a really great job of picking up where Brian Vaughn left off with the origin of the Hood and provide a humanity to the character that is never seen in the Hood's appearances in the regular Avengers titles. Suicide Kings was another great Deadpool read, with snappy dialogue, it's hard to get oversaturated with Deadpool. Mighty Avengers has been in a dry spell as of late, but this issue picks the action back up and the cameo by a man in black makes it all worthwhile.

DC had a relatively slow week as well, after the recent rush of releases. Justice League of America had a really strong launch, but is definitely showing signs of struggling. You can have decent writers, but when you hobble them by not giving the premier team up book the use of Batman, Superman or Wonder Woman, you're just asking for trouble. Blackest Night Superman saw the return of Earth 1 Superman and Lois Lane as Black Lanterns. Superman and Superboy may be in trouble here as Earth 1 Superman could push entire planets out of his way like rubber balls. But the best DC book out this week must be Batman Streets of Gotham. Hush in his disguise as Bruce Wayne is doing his best to bankrupt the Bat team, but he might want to think twice once he meets the superpowered supporters of Batman. Cameos by half of the Justice League with strong writing by Dini makes picking up every issue of this series a no brainer.

Invincible fans got a break from the non-stop pummelings with this week's issue as they deal with the aftermath of Conquest. Some hot and heavy action from Mark and Eve cap off this issue and Mark realizes that once he's crossed the line with one villain, why shouldn't he just stay on that side of the line?

Comic readers may have had a bit of a slump this week, but trade readers have had their best week for releases in months! Vertigo readers got two great reads this week. Accalimed writer Ian Rankin takes a crack at John Constantine in Dark Entries; where John steps into a reality tv show house to figure out just what is haunting the houseguests. And from the creator of 100 Bullets; Brian Azzarello, we're served up Filthy Rich on a gold platter. A washed up car salesman is sent to watch over his bosses' young beautiful jet set daughter. Yeah, that really does sound like a recipe for disaster for that poor sap. Horror fans got another bone thrown to them in the second beautiful volume of the Eerie archives. Don't worry, we haven't forgotten about you Marvel zombies as well. The first volume of Bendis' fantastic Dark Avengers series saw its first volume hit the shelf in hardcover. Ellis' first run of Ghostboxes in Astonishing X-men also saw a hardcover release. Of course, the Punisher saw this happening and decided he might as well force the team at Marvel to release the first volume of his Dark Reign series as well. For the fan who can't get enough of war comics, the first volume of Unknown Soldier in softcover should satisfy your appetite.

Well, comic fans, it's been fun but it's time for the Big B crew to sign off. Tune in next week, because it's going to be one fantastic week for comics with a boatload of titles coming in. This is the Big B Crew signing off reminding you that; "If life gives you lemons, make lemonade and drink it while reading a comic book!"

Good day, ladies and gents! It's that time of the week again, as the Big B crew takes you through what came out this week and what you should definitely be reading.

Even without many of their Dark Reign titles or Avengers titles, Marvel still pulls off an impressive showing through the re-release of the Ultimate line of books. Ultimate Spider-Man comes swinging out of the gates with the start of its second volume and an all new #1. Continuing with Brian Bendis as writer, he is joined by David Lafuente on art duties. A great read as Bendis continues to take Peter into uncharted Spidey territory and the new numbering encourages new readers to jump onto the bandwagon. Mark Millar finally returns to the Ultimate Universe with Ultimate Avengers. Picking up from the wreckage of Ultimatum, this first issue seems a bit short and leaves you definitely wanting more. Great dialogue and characterization by Millar with dynamic art makes this issue read like a blockbuster movie. In the regular 616-verse, the return of Mary Jane continues on in Amazing Spider-Man as what appears to be a brand new Chameleon makes his debut. A solid read for Spidey fans, not outstanding, but not bad either. Uncannny X-Men is moving the story along briskly as Cyclops has some definite plans in mind for dealing with the new status quo of Emma Frost's defection. The last page of this issue gives us a hint for what's in store for the mutants of tomorrow. It seems that everytime an issue of Daniel Way's Deadpool comes out, it finds a way to sneak into our weekend update and this week is no different. Adventure abound on the high seas as Deadpool decides to become a pirate. We have to say, there hasn't been a single issue of this series that disappoints since its debut in Secret Invasion. This week also saw the start of Ed Brubaker's latest offering; The Marvels Project. Looking back into the Golden Age of Marvel Comic history, we're going back to the debut of Namor, Human Torch, Nick Fury and the Angel to start. This issue has a lot of ground to cover to get the story set up, but still manages to cover four different characters in a short amount of space without being rushed. Fans of Marvel's Golden Age and those wanting to see the origin of Nick Fury won't be disappointed.

It looks like DC heard our grumbling last week and decided to bring out some fantastic reads to appease us. The second issue of Blackest Night hit the rack and this time it's Aquaman's time to shine. Interesting developments unfold as it seems not even the Spectre is immune to the power of the Black Rings, but Dove of Hawk and Dove is? Despite being a laughing stock in most comic circles, this issue makes Aquaman seem like someone you really don't want to mess with, you know, with the whole sharks tearing you to bits thing. A double dose of Batman came in the form of the regular Batman series and Blackest Night Batman, solid reads but nothing outstanding about them. Can't say the same about the return of Adventure Comics though. Marking the return of Superboy, this series features incredible art by Canadian artist; Francis Manapul. Written by Geoff Johns, the first issue follows Superboy as he follows in the step by step footprints of Superman as he grew up in Smallville. While a bit cliched in the introduction of his own possible Lex Luthor wannabe rival, still a great read for fans of the kryptonians. Speaking of Kryptonians, Action Comics saw the return of Superman to the title. Coming back from New Krypton, Superman is chasing after the assassin of Zod and is brought up to date on recent events. Another fantastic read for Superman fans.

Hellboy fans should be pleased with the release of two Mignola titles this week. Hellboy The Wild Hunt and BPRD 1947 were strong reads with the usual art style that just seems fitting for the titles without being able to describe just why it works. It just does!

As good as single issue readers had it this week, trade fans may have it just as good if not better! From the pen of Robert Kirkman, we got Brit Vol 3 TP, Invincible Vol 11 Tp and The Walking Dead Vol 10! We can only handle so much greatness in one sitting! Invincible continues to be one of the best superhero titles to be released in the last 10 years. Batman fans will need to make some room on their bookshelf for Batman Hush as the formerly two volume story arc has been compiled into one volume. And to cap it all off with a Spoon, we also got; Tick Specials: The Complete Works. Compiling all of the one-offs and holiday issues, this hilarious volume should make it's way onto the shelf of any comic fan who loves a good laugh.

Well alas, that's all the time we have this week. Tune in next week for even more comic talk and news. Also, don't forget about the Fan Expo show taking place on August 29th-31st in Toronto. Look for the Big B crew there and stop by our booth where our great deals will knock your socks off. This is the Big B crew signing off, reminding you that; diamonds really aren't forever, fire destroys them the same way they do comic books, so buy comics instead of diamonds!
