The Big B Anniversary Sale is coming!
Posted 9/05/2009
Greetings once again, comic lovers! You're here with the Big B crew as we take a gander at some of the must read titles of the week. But before we get into that, the Big B Anniversary sale is coming! September 12-13th! Make sure to stop on by and check out some of our awesome deals. Back issues will be 50% off! Trades and Manga? Buy 3 and get the 4th free! We've even added 25 longboxes of prime grade comics to our $1.99 bins! Free BBQ! Many other great deals! Excessive use of exclamation points! So remember to stop in and sample the great deals. You may even see a superhero or two! Also remember that Big B Comics will be closed on Monday September 7th for Labour Day. Marvel may not have had the biggest week of the summer, but they more than make up for it in quality. The second issue of Ultimate Spider-Man dropped, with the title going even further beyond its original retelling of classic stories, with Spidey being liked for once by the public and continuing his relationship with Gwen Stacy over MJ. So not only is he no longer married to MJ in the 616 universe, he's not even dating her in the Ultimate one either! Tough luck, MJ. The Strange Tales miniseries came out of left field with an allstar cast of writers and artists; as the likes of Jason, Paul Pope and Johnny Ryan take a crack at the Marvel characters. This miniseries anthology was far better than expected and should be on every Marvel fan's pull list. Brubaker's Incognito series came to a conclusion as Zack Overkill finally learns his true origins and makes a decision on whether to be a hero or a villain. This miniseries could definitely be an amazing ongoing, but alas, Brubaker only has enough time to do Criminal or Incognito, but not both. And finally, the Marvel Zombies make their return in Marvel Zombies: Return in one of the more gutwrenching issues ever! A good read for all the zombie fans out there, though I am sure many of you are feeling the loss of Robert Kirkman as the writer from the first two series. DC had a bit of a lowkey week as well. Two new miniseries kicked off this week; Red Tornado and Magog. Not exactly the A-list when it comes to characters, but for fans of the characters, these are pretty entertaining reads if not all that deep. Batman on the otherhand, was a great read as Dick continues to step into the role of Batman and sets us up for a classic encounter between Dick and Two-Face who was the first memorable villain for the boy wonder. Image brought us the fourth issue of Chew, which took the crazy idea of a detective getting detectives by eating pieces of the crime scene and took it past 11. Chew is a great series that can't be recommended enough. Where else can you find a comic where a FDA agent eats the cremated ashes of a senator? Sweet Tooth by Jeff Lemire is a new series about a boy with antlers and deer ears being raised in the deep woods. An intriguing series and with the first issue only being a dollar, you can't go wrong. Despite the small week of new single issues this week, trade readers got all they could ever want. DC readers got Baman Gotham After Midnight in softcover, Superman New Krypton HC and JSA Vol 5 HC. The New Krypton and Black Adam storylines are some of the best DC stories to come out as of late. Fans of 52 will be glad to see a conclusion to the sad story of Black Adam and Isis, while Superman fans get to see Superman in an all new way as he interacts with a growing Kryptonian population on Earth! Brian Wood's dystopian series; DMZ has its seventh volume hit the shelf as well. The surprise hit Wonderful Wizard of Oz had a hardcover release this week as well. Great writing with some amazing art that fits well with the setting make this series a can't miss. Well, that's all the time we have for now. This is the Big B crew signing off reminding you that; "if you are running out of room to store your comics, find creative solutions, like using longboxes as furniture!"

The correct answer to that should be the Fan Expo in Marvel had another massive week with titles coming from all over the Marvel universe. Some of the standout titles this week are Deadpool, Secret Warriors, Nova and New Avengers. Deadpool is being pushed out by Marvel at an incredible rate, even faster than Amazing Spider-Man. But despite coming out every week, the art and writing still remain topnotch for fans of action and comedy. Nova deals with the fallout of War Of Kings crossover and helps usher into a new era for the Nova corps as they rebuild. Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Warriors is still one of the best titles to come from Marvel, with this issue shaping up for a confrontation between the Nick Fury and Osborn. The Hulk family all landed this week as well, with Incredible Hulk, Hulk and Son of Hulk While Hulk and Son of Hulk are middle of the lane average, we’ve got high expectations for Greg Pak’s Incredible Hulk as Skarr and Bruce Banner team up to prepare the eventual fight with the Hulk. Fantastic Four kicked off this week with Dale Eaglesham as the new artist. With his Reed Richards more Indiana Jones than meek scientist, an interesting start to a very Reed Richards focused arc. DC definitely brought the wow factor with them this week as well. Grant Morrison’s All-Star Batman #3 lead the charge with a fantastic issue by Morrison featuring an interesting pig man dance. But that’s not all the Batman love this week. Kevin Smith returns with a great first issue of Batman The Widening Gyre, set before the events of RIP. The return of the Flash continues as we get a nice battle issue between the Reverse Flash and the many Flashes. Green Lantern delivers another strong issue as the Sinestro Corps and Star Sapphires duke it out. And finally, Gotham City Sirens with its amazing art by Guillem March gives us a surprisingly good issue with the focus on the Riddler. Another surprise of this week was Great reads for trade fans as well this week. The fifth volume of the Iron Fist series makes a splash with its hardcover release. Covering the Eight City of Heaven arc, Duane Swa-ah I give up has done a great job of picking up where Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker left off. Mutant lovers got the second volume of X-Force in softcover while the complete Messiah War crossover has been collected into one hardcover volume. World of Warcraft fans get two doses of their favourite franchise as volume 1 hits in softcover and volume 2 hits in hardcover. Well, that’s all the time we have this week. This is the Big B Crew signing off reminding you to drop by the Big B booth at the Fan Expo this weekend.
