Part of the reason I love Hellboy so much is where Mike Mignola (creator/writer) gets his story ideas from. Most of the time it’s famous cultural folklore or legends. This time he has taken his influence from a famous fictional story.
Hellboy: The Midnight Circus is a brand new Hellboy story just released this past week. In this story a young Hellboy runs away from his home at the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) and stumbles upon a strange new midnight circus that could possibly have come from hell.
While at the circus Hellboy and the circus leader talk about running away and the fable that is Pinocchio. Talk of the fable scares Hellboy because he realizes that he is following in Pinocchio’s fabled footsteps, a path which can only lead to suffering. They discuss Pinocchio running away with the circus, to then be transformed into a donkey and getting mistreated by his fellow circus performers. After this discussion Hellboy grows frightened by the tale and runs away from the circus.
The following journey takes Hellboy to some interesting places and sees some very interesting stuff. With a classic Hellboy written book by Mike Mignola, and creepy but beautiful artwork you really can’t go wrong reading Hellboy: The Midnight Circus. It’s a great Halloween read at only $14.99.
