There has been a lot of buzz lately about gay comic book characters, but this is nothing new! Gay, lesbian, and bisexual characters have been around for a long time, and while the buzz is strong right now, we can’t forget about the other awesome gay characters comics have brought us. From Kevin Keller, to Batwoman, to Karolina Dean, to Bunker, to Northstar!

Jean-Paul Beaubier, also known as the Alpha Flight member Northstar, kicked off this latest buzz with his announcement and subsequent wedding invations for his marriage to fiance Kyle. Northstar being out is nothing new, as he was one of the first gay characters to come out back in the early nineties thanks to an encounter with Rogue. Marvel weddings are always fun and exciting events, so pick up Astonishing X-Men #51 to join in the festivities.

As for DC, they’ve announced a recently returning character to the New 52 lineup will be reintroduced as gay. This kicked up a lot of buzz at the Big B counter, everyone is trying to figure out who it is. Latest gossip is pointing to Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern! Word on the street is that his backstory and coming out will happen in Earth 2 #2, out next week!

Gay, straight, and everything in between, it’s great to see comic companies having all types of heroes (and villains!). It takes all types to make the world go ’round, and that’s true for comics too!
