This week I picked up my first piece of manga. Manga is an area that intimidated me, it is a very large market that I have had no exposure to and had no idea where to first dip in my toe. Thankfully I had Laura there to direct me.
Death Note, written by Tsugumi Ohba, is the story of Light Yagami who has found a notebook called the Death Note. When he writes a human’s name in the book, that person dies. So Light decides to use the book to pass his righteous judgement and cleanse the world of evil people. Watching over Light is the bored Shinigami death god Ryuk, who dropped the book in the human world for the entertainment. It doesn’t take long for people around the world to realize that someone is killing off all of the criminals. In steps L, a mysterious detective determined to find the person responsible for so many deaths.
This is only the first book in a series so I look forward to following Light and L as they hunt and try to confuse each other. While we don’t know much about L at this point Light is a very interesting character, he is convinced that all of the deaths that he cause are warrented (bad people deserve to die) and that he is doing it to create a better world. But at the same time, he intends to rule over that better world, so he is not exactly selfless. There are also moments when he is talking to Ryuk when I wonder if Light is a little bit crazy, but that just makes it all the more intriguing.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to read manga but is not looking for anything cute or a love story. It is easy to follow and has a very intesting story to tell.
